METRO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR STATE MATHCOUNTS
Metro Christian Academy Middle School students excelled at the Regional MathCounts Competition on Saturday, February 20 at Tulsa University.
Each participant in a MathCounts event receives an individual score from 2 individual tests, and based on that score, the top 10 students advance to a buzzer round to improve their placement in the competition. In addition, four of the students represent their respective school as a team. The team score is determined by taking the average of the four individual scores and adding the points earned on the team round. At the regional event school teams have the opportunity to place in their respective classification - small, medium, or large. Advancement to state is based on overall rank.
Placing in the top 25 students at the Regional event were: Thatcher Chonka, Caleb Wilson, Matt Buckman, Tori Patrock, Kyle Hendrix, and JT Long. Thatcher Chonka advanced to the countdown round and placed 8th at the regional competition. The MCA team of Thatcher Chonka, Bryant Boatright, Matt Buckman, and Caleb Wilson captured first place among mid-sized schools and ranked third overall, securing their advancement to the state competition on March 6, 2010. An additional highlight of the competition results is that the Metro team had the highest score on the team round of the competition.
Congratulation to the Metro students, Metro team, and MathCounts coach Cheri Sieck on the outstanding performance at Regionals.
